The world of microscopy will not be the same without Irene's shining presence. She was a very special person. So helpful to all. I will miss dancing with her.

Rest In Peace, dear Irene. You were a mentor, inspiration and friend, not just to me but to generations of female microscopists. You will be greatly missed.

We were neighbors in the office cubes and we were neighbors in the instrument labs in Mahwah. Never an angry word and so, so much energy. Irene was the queen of complex workarounds when something did not do exactly what she wanted, but she always got the result she needed! She taught me how to focus an image of a biological sample: I would set focus to what I thought was good, and then I would change focus while not looking at the image but at Irene's face. Her facial expression would tell me when the image was good! Lots of fond memories which I will always treasure. Rest in Peace Irene!

Irene was so special to me. I am named after her and she has spoiled me for as long as I can remember. She also inspired me to have a career in Engineering and to travel. I would always be excited when Irene had a work trip to where I was living as that meant a dinner together and long conversations. She extended her love to my children as well. She attended their Baptisms and never let a special event go by without a card in the mail. I will miss her energy and spirit, hand written notes and her drive. I feel so fortunate to have had her in my life. I take comfort that she is reunited with Don. Rest in peace sweet Irene. I love you!

Irene was a great friend and an inspiration. I feel privileged to get to know Irene early in my career as an electron microscopist. I stumbled into the EM field after recovering from a serious illness. Irene taught me how to operate my first electron microscope. She was always positive and supportive and her enthusiasm and boundless energy were infectious. She will be forever missed. Rest in peace, my friend.

It is hard to cover all the selfless things that Irene has done over the 30 years that I have known her. She was generous with her time and money and always looked after for others in both business and personal matters. She was a tiger when advocating for her customers.
In addition to the many helpful business interactions over the years, I have personal memories of Irene supporting me when I was taking care of my mother. My wife has great memories of her at M&M, particularly playing tennis on the hotel rooftop during the Cleveland M&M Show. And she always paid attention to the special occasions for my children and grandchildren.

Irene and I met in 2008. At that time I was doing my Ph.D. in materials science at CUNY and I needed to do some imaging and that is why I met her: we became friends instantly. What intrigued me since the beginning was her high energy: it was just incredible to be around this strong and passionate woman who had been a pioneer in the transmission electron microscopy. Every time I was meeting with her I needed to drink several coffees to even match 50% of her energy. All the CUNY friends who happened to meet her also had an instantaneous attraction to her passionate and energetic style. She was so kind in always remembering my children' birthdays and sending them a card. I will always remember her. RIP my wonderful friend.

Irene made it possible for me to go to Mary Washington and complete my pre-medical education. Because of her, I'm about to start my second year of medical school. I was lucky enough to get to met her a few times in person before the pandemic, and she was the sweetest, most genuinely caring person I have ever met. She always kept in touch via letters and wanted to know how I was doing. She is such an inspiration for me and many other women who are able to have a career in the sciences because of women like her who paved the way. She has changed the lives of so many students, and her legacy will be with us forever. UMW won't be the same without her, and she will be missed greatly.

I met Irene in 2009 when she was celebrating her 50th reunion at the University of Mary Washington. Subsequently I had the pleasure of reconnecting with her many times at Mary Washington events. She made the trip to Virginia frequently to meet with students, fellow alumni and UMW staff with whom she had grown close over the years. Irene’s generosity with donations and gifts as well as her time and energy were boundless.
Irene was a humble person, generous with her friendship, always putting others before herself.
Irene will be greatly missed at Mary Washington as well as in the other spheres of her life.
With deepest sympathy, Patti Kemp

Irene was such a remarkable woman. I had known her for 20 years when we worked at Phillips and FEI together. Irene had enormous energy; she always looked out for our customers and new employees. She was a strong supporter of women in science. Today we have The Women in Microscopy Breakfast each year at M&M, which Irene started. Early on, Irene met with her friends and colleagues each year for breakfast. Because the group became so large, the company decided to formalize the event; we have had it every year since (even virtually during the pandemic).
Irene holds a special place in my heart, and I’m grateful to have learned many things from her and to have the annual breakfast as her legacy.

I first met Irene when I was an EM technician working at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I was all of 23 years old and knew that while I'd had a solid basic education in the craft that I still had so much to learn and I recognized how much I could learn from Irene. She was always eager to share her vast knowledge with anyone who would listen. Irene introduced me to many people who, over the years, have become valued colleagues and friends. She was a true force of nature and she will be dearly missed by her friends in the "EM World" as well as by her treasured family and friends in all aspects of her life.
Go in peace, my friend.

Irene and I have been friends since 1962 when we were both working at American Cyanamid. I went to Michigan afterwards for a masters degree where she got her masters. The other graduate students called me another Irene! We attended each other’s weddings in 1966 and 1969. She was like a sister to me. Irene was an “aunt” to our children and grandchildren. She was a very special person and Vince and I will miss her greatly. We live in Indiana so are unable to attend her funeral. We hope that her funeral Mass will be live-streamed.
Blessings to a very special friend of 60 years,

Mrs. Irene made my undergraduate research dreams possible through her generous funding during my senior year at UMW. More than that, she was a delight to speak with and an inspiration for all of us who had the pleasure of meeting with her. I wish we could’ve met in person instead of just on Zoom, but she was so kind and so very involved with the lives she touched that she attended my honors thesis defense and followed up with me about it after. She seemed like the nicest woman and leaves behind such an incredible legacy. My hope is that she received my Christmas card from this past Christmas and was able to see just how much she influenced the trajectory of my life with her scholarship and encouragement. My sincerest condolences to her family and all those who knew her.

Irene was my mentor when I joined FEI 24 years ago - she took me under her wing and was extremely patient and kind. She was a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm and loved to put herself out for others. She was smart as a whip and wanted only to help others understand the complexities of electron microscopy, she made it seem so simple. She pretended to be my mum when I tried on wedding dresses during a business trip to Cornell - she actually picked out the dress, I thought I wanted something completely different until I tried it on to placate her. I had to go on bed rest after laughing so hard with her when I was pregnant and we went shopping for Valentines presents for our husbands. She and Don were such a wonderful couple, she was the Yin to his Yang. I will raise a glass to her at the Women's Breakfast at the Microscopy and Microanalysis show next month - she started that breakfast over 50 years ago when she realized she could help other women scientists by creating a network where they could share information and ask embarrassing questions without judgement. We now get over 200 women at those breakfasts every year. I will miss her terribly but am so comforted that she was being cared for by people who loved her and she wasn't alone at the end. I spoke with her just last week and she was enjoying her niece's company, not to mention her baking! I imagine her joy at being reunited with her beloved Don, and they are dancing. I will never forget Irene.

Being a recent 2020 scholarship recipient from Ms. Rodgers, i did not know her for long. In the two years we knew each other we emailed and sent letters frequently learning about each other’s lives and interests. I will miss our virtual interactions and am saddened we were never able to meet in person due to the pandemic. I am so incredibly grateful for the impact Ms. Rodgers had on my life academically and personally. I will miss her.

It is with sadness but fond memories that offer my condolences to Irene’s family and friends. When I met Irene twenty years ago, we began as work colleagues. Irene was one of the finest electron microscope applications experts that I have had the privilege to work with. Over the years we became friends. I always looked forward to catching up with Irene at our M&M social events. Irene generously offered her spiritual support when my wife was terminally ill. Irene was an extraordinary person. I will miss her.

Irene, my parents and I were shocked when we heard the sad news. You were such an active person. You left us so soon. I know you missed Don very much but now you are with him again. We shared an interest in chemistry and I fondly remember talking to you about this subject. You will always have a special place in our heart. Your good deeds will be always remembered.
