Michael has always been a kind, caring and loving person. I have very fond childhood memories of playing with Mike and his brothers when we'd visit them in Mayo. As the only girl of the group Mike always looked out for me, making sure I was ok...and he was a hero to me then, before he ever had the chance to grow up and do bigger, braver, kinder things in the wider world. And he certainly did do those things. The world is truly a poorer place without you, cousin. Sending deepest, heartfelt condolences to all of Michael's family and loved ones especially Peggy, Martin, Patrick, Joey and Martin and to his beloved children. The beauty of a star continues to be experienced long after it goes out. With love from Maria, Ann, Shauna, James and Joy xxx

On September 11th 2001 I was trapped in the rubble after both towers were brought down. I prayed and called out for help and helped arrived. It arrived in the form of four of the bravest, dedicated, and selfless NYC FIREMEN, one of which was Mike Lyons. We have been friends ever since. From the moment we were reunited months later our friendship grew. I loved his soft spoken demeanor, Irish brogue accent and caring and kind gentle soul. He never wanted any attention drawn to him, he didn’t want to trouble others with his troubles and illness yet he helped so many in return, again selflessly. On 9/11 I had an angel on earth who made sure I got home safe to my family and now we all have an angel in heaven watching over all of us. Mike I will miss you. Until we see each other again my friend. We love you.

With heartfelt condolences to Michael’s beloved children, Jillian and Aidan, to his loving parents, Margaret and Martin, to Michael’s brothers and their families whom he adored, and to all of Michael’s wonderful friends and Brothers at the FDNY, who always supported him in ways big and small. You lived in constant strength, unending courage, and eternal hope. Your enthusiasm and your great love for life were as authentic as your smiling Irish eyes, no matter the circumstances. You were like that with your children, with your family, and with me. Selfless and giving. Always. These past two years have been the greatest gift of love and devotion I could ever have dreamt possible. How deeply grateful I am for loving you, Michael. We made the best of each and every moment we had together. It’s sharing that time, especially sunset walks along the beach, that I shall cherish all the days of my life. I want your family to know how much you were loved amongst the men of The Harlem Zoo. You have given more to the job and the members than you’ll ever know. I would ask how you’re doing and you would reply “ I’m still on this side of the grass” . Your body make have transitioned to the other side but your spirit, strength, courage and warm character will always bring a smile to the faces you have touched in this life. Dear Mike Lyons , The Whole Entire World was Blessed the day you were born. There is so much I want to say, but yet it is so hard to get the words out. You are a light that shines brightly in a dark world. Your kind, selfless, heroic strength & compassion for others (some you didn’t even know) will continue to light the way for us all. Your children Jillian & Aiden, your beloved Mother & Father Margaret and Martin, your sweet Sumi, and all of your brothers and families & FDNYFamily are our in our prayers. You are loved by so many. You are honored and remembered as a hero, even though you never thought of yourself in that way…. Mike and myself came on the job and were probies together back in 98. Early in our careers I detailed to his firehouse E-228 and it was Mike who was awaiting to be relieved by me. Later I had the pleasure of relieving him many more times when we were both new officers in the 6th division. I can honestly say he was one of the most genuine individuals I’ve ever met and a true gentleman and his smile and that brogue just made him all the more a beautiful human who anyone who knew him was a better person for it. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest In Peace my brother.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss! I had a Jillian in first grade and I fondly remember Mr. Lyons visiting our class to talk about his career as a firefighter. He brought his gear and let the kids try it on. He was a kind man with a warm smile who shared his love of his children and career with his others. I would often see him in the morning when he dropped the kids off to school. He always was smiling and had a kind word to say. I pray that you find comfort during these challenging times! His life was a blessing.
