Anne, Maryanne, Rich, Jack, and Katie, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Dick Barry, Mr. Barry or Jackie and Richie's dad when I was growing up in Halesite, was a wonderful and kind man! I admired and respected him not just because he was a friend's father, but because like many of the adults I knew through my childhood friends, he also actively took it upon himself to mentor me. I can still vividly recall sitting in the Barry living room when I was 12 or 13 being amazed while he showed me how to hold a basketball with one hand and then went on to convince me that the only intelligent choice to make regarding baseball was to be a Yankees fan. He knew I favored the Mets and of course knew he was fighting an uphill battle trying to convince me to root for a team that had not been close to competing for the pennant since 1964. He knew exactly how terrible the Mets had become under Grant McDonald and did not hesitate to spell that out to me. More importantly though, he did not lecture me, but asked my opinion of the Mets and how they compared to the Yankees. He laid out the vaunted history of the Yankees, but seemed also to realize that kids do not care too much about what happened before they were born. By the time I left the Barry house that day he had recruited a new Yankee fan and a Yankee fan I have stayed even living up here in Boston with 2 sons and a wife who are Red Sox fans. God bless you all during this difficult time.

Some of us East Meadow students/athletes met Dick at St Regis basketball camp in East Hampton NY, when Bob Medwid recruited us as camp counselors in the summer of 1967. He supported us and countless others as students and athletes and became East Meadow’s biggest fan and cheer leader. We all kept in touch through our love of sports and enjoyed his numerous stories of colleagues, students he taught and counseled and mutual friends. He will be greatly missed but as stated, his good nature and friendship will always be cherished. Danny Mayer

Dick and I have been colleagues for over 30 years and friends for over 50 years. He and Anne have been good friends to me and my wife, Joan. Dick was a great guy - so special - always smiling - always positive - always there to help. He could see the good in everybody. He was an outstanding teacher and administrator. Dick always focused on the well being of kids. He truly loved them. We shall miss his chatty phone calls. To say that he will be missed is an understatement. Dick may be physically gone but his legacy carries on. He lives in our hearts and memories forever. We are fortunate to have known Dick and thankful to have had him as our friend.

We started getting close years ago through our mutual love of our alma mater All Hallows’ HS. Got even closer in recent years because of Huntington and many car rides to the city & sporting events!! Favorite appropriate Irish poem:
“Death brings a heartache no one can heal
But love leaves a memory no one can steal”
Dick Barry - a great family man & a great friend!!

In the words of his grandchildren..what a great man! I had the pleasure of teaching at EMHS for a short time . Dick was a wonderful principal. Quick memory…there was an incident in the hallway one day. Two boys had a tussle and one of them(my student) hit his head on the tile wall. Needless to say, there was way too much blood from a head wound. I am kneeling on the floor trying to put pressure on his head as I’m shouting orders to get the nurse, etc. When help arrived and I finally stood up I felt somewhat wobbly. Dick escorted me down to his office asked how I was feeling and then proceeded to pour me a shot of whiskey(or scotch, I forget which)! I laughed I cried. And will be forever grateful to this wonderful man RIP Dick Barry Prayers of peace for this family.
