When I think of Livi, my neighbor for 45ish something years, I think of hard work and dedication. She was devoted to her family, her profession as a teacher, friends and neighbors. Also, when I think of Livi, I think of Ernie. They were inseparable. Livi and Ernie worked out together, rode bikes together, went to basketball practice together. They were definitely a role model for the perfect couple. Livi always went the extra mile. When I was sick she took me to the hospital and stayed with me for 12 hours until I was admitted. She also fed my cat countless times whenever I was away. Livi loved the outdoors, especially the beach and her own yard always looked so pretty, thanks to her devoted gardening maintenance. I don't think I've ever seen Livi angry; she always had a calming presence about her. Subsequently, Livi was also very witty with an infectious laugh. One of the many pleasant memories, that I will cherish forever. I miss you Livi and I think of you often, Ernie. My deepest condolences and sympathies go out to you and your family. Livi's mass was beautiful. I can't believe that she has passed on. Just one more memory: when I was an adolescent, Livi & Ernie would frequently have me over on weekend mornings for Dunkin Donuts. I still have vivid memories of sitting at the kitchen table, surrounded by picturesque views of their backyard which had a stone patio and wrought iron furniture, luscious green grass, vibrant impatien flowers around the trees and lots of bird feeders to attract all of the beautiful wild birds. Rest In Peace Livi! XOXO, Kara

For years I have tried to reach a wonderful woman and teacher. I attended the 2nd Grade at Babylon Memorial Grade School. My teachers’ name was Olivia Merz. Olivia was the first person to introduce me to Basketball. She took a major interest in a little boy who was troubled and in great need of Love and compassion. She broke the “rules” for me and enlisted her husband, Ernie Merz, a former Adelphi basketball player to come after school one day to play ball with Me. Both Olivia and Ernie were kind, attentive, and most of all gave of themselves all for a little boy. She taught me how to read and write but most of all she loved and molded me. In a time of self centeredness and selfishness, I harken back to a time when people like Olivia were selfless and compassionate and gave their personal time to help one soul in need. I tried for years to get her address, phone number, any information from the school. They rejected me at every turn. I even asked the school to leave a message with her (as they knew her whereabouts) and they still refused. Awful of them. By a stroke of luck I found some old paperwork from those years and found her husbands’ first name as I had forgot it. I found the number and called only to find out that Olivia had passed away Dec. 9, 2021 from cancer. Ernie, who is devastated, was kind enough to share some thoughts and recollections of me and even told me how they would go to Madison Square Garden to see me play. I write this testimonial as a tribute to a woman, who, without her guidance and love, I would certainly not be the man she helped mold today. All my love to you Olivia. I will see you again my beloved teacher.

Although the years and miles have separated us, my love and respect for Livy never diminished.
