Obituary of John Meehan

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John T. Meehan, Huntington Station resident of 43 years, passed away at Huntington Hospital on December 1, 2020 due to COVID. Vibrant and healthy prior to COVID, John’s death came as an unexpected shock. John is survived by his wife of fifty years, Betty, and their three children, Justin, Damian and Sheila. John loved his family and was close to all of his nephews (Stephen, Tim, Kevin, Scott, Christopher, Daniel, Michael) and niece (Erin). He loved all 6 of his grandchildren, spending time in person and on the phone with Kaela, Joshua, Peter, Dylan, Lara and Tyler. Neither physical distance nor painful puns could diminish the closeness of their relationships with their grandfather. John graduated from Manhattan College (English Literature) and received his Masters (Criminal Justice) from CUNY. He worked for the NYS Department of Parole and upon retiring, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the LI State Veterans Home in Stony Brook and was a regular participant in readings and events at the Walt Whitman House. He loved the written word and avidly pursued knowledge his entire life. He battled and frequently vanquished the NYT Sunday crossword and enjoyed reading histories, small plays and proofing anything any of his family ever wrote. There are not strong enough words to convey our sorrow at his loss. John is most remembered by his family and friends for his bottomless empathy and kindness to those around him. He engaged almost everyone in conversation and was touched to have so many share so much with him. A mass in will be scheduled in the spring when we can all gather in person to celebrate his life.
