To know her is to love her. As my cousin Eileen said, “All the ones that speak to us are great.” She was mother to seven children and yet took Eileen and I to her very heartbeat loving us as we were orphaned when our own mothers passed too soon. That her heart was just so big was not her greatest characteristic. Her zeal for life, now that was something. She was honest and intelligent, well spoken and involved. She poured her beautiful smile into this world. I loved our lengthy conversations of past. We swapped stories, advice, talked of loss and gain, books and politics. She loved my husband Ned, appreciating his humor and abilities. Her laughter was contagious and her God was so important, He to her core. She was a storyteller and grandmother. How she enjoyed being a mother. My aunt knew how to do that best; her children did not define her, they were her. We traveled to one another’s homes and when Meroke Court was no more, my beautiful aunt acclimated herself to places where they made her bed and did her dishes. Her strength and beauty were timeless, how I loved when her eyes twinkled. Now my beautiful aunt belongs to the ages, reunited with my uncle and precious daughter Donna. She soars with the angels. God blessed us with His own, yes, to know her is to love, love her.

Mom has taken the entire Gaffney family on a summer vacation every year for more than 20 years. No easy feat since the Gaffney clan has grown to 27 people. The love in my Mom’s eyes was awesome as she watched her 13 grandchildren and families bond. Mom’s Joy was a blessing to everyone.

I am blessed to have so many wonderful memories of my mother, it is hard to know where to start. Early Years: Growing up, our home was always filled with neighbors & friends. We knew everyone in the neighborhood and celebrated life with backyard parties and BBQs. Our station wagon was packed to the brim as my Mom drove all 7 of us & friends to swim in the Dix Hills Pool, LI Sound, ski at Hi Point Ski Club, drive-in movies & countless excursions. One time, at the 110 drive-in, we parked next to a neighbor teenager, Jack & his girlfriend. Of course all 14 of us jumped out of our car to greet him & knock on his windows. As you can imagine, Jack wasn’t thrilled. My Mom laughed & moved the car. It was such a small loving world.

Mom was such an inspiration to the entire family- always being supportive and so much more concerned about others needs than her own.
