My absolute favorite teacher at Woodbury Avenue School!!! Taught me to play trumpet in 3rd grade and I became first chair until we graduated as the last graduating class at Woodbury Ave!!! Wished I could have gone to the reunion of Woodbury Ave as I heard she attended. Such a great lady!! Will be remembered and miss by so many lives she touched!!

Two quotes come to mind.
The first hung over “Shoey’s” desk: “Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.”
This reminder to plan ahead, take responsibility for yourself, and not expect others to prepare for you was a statement of her constantly high expectations for her students (and herself). I have come to realize that incredible respect was implied in that line. It meant she knew we could do it, and expected us to.
The second quote was my choice for the yearbook senior year (1987):
“What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose; all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”
Those of us who had the privilege to be part of Linda Shoemaker’s band know that our time and experience DID become of the people we are now. May that provide some comfort at this sad time for all.

I met Ms. Linda Shoemaker in September, 1994. She made such a positive impact on my life in those precious wonderful years. She made band and just HS period the best times of my life! From concert band lessons (which I sucked at and hated at the time Lol) to NYSSMA to Marching band practice alllllll day in summer to our 1995 DISNEY TRIP... WE WERE THE BEST BAND!! HUNTINGTON HIGH!!
I will always remember her techniques, wisdom and kind words. She was a beautiful soul. What an amazing journey she led. I am SO lucky to have known and been taught by her. Thank you for the best times and memories. May your spirit be forever free.

Teacher, leader, mentor, counselor, friend. Just a few words to describe what Linda has been to me since our first meeting as I walked into 8th grade band in 1972.
From me not being able for the life of me to get "The Candy Man" right, to getting her coffee from the deli across from Finley, ice skating, selling candles, oranges, grapefruits, she taught me that practice and hard work, would get us to where we belonged.
Parades, performances, Disneyland, marching with plastic over our drums cause it was POURING rain. Concerts in the park, ice cream at friendly's, dinner at Rustlers. Moving her into her new home, toilet papering her new house, coming back the next day to remove it all cause somehow she knew who it was.
As I grew older, it was an alumni band march, a 75th birthday party, a few hospital visits in between, and a month ago we shared a bottle of cabernet.
I will miss her dearly, Linda Shoemaker, but the memories and stories I have will be with me forever.
Fly high my friend!

Ms. Shoemaker was a wonderful woman who really had such a huge impact in the lives of so many students in the Huntington community. Whether you were in the band or carrying a flag, She wanted you to stand tall has your feet on the ground and have pride. She led the way for her band to go to Disney and Pasadena to March in parades, Or in Huntington village. Wherever you were, When you were with her you knew you were part of something big. Almost 40 years later, She stayed on Facebook and she was there as a mentor and A kind human being to anybody who needed a friend,or advice. She told me that her Uncle was the great jockey Bill shoemaker . Though her sister just recently told me that was never confirmed.. It's OK we discussed it every year whenever I went to the race.. She was proud of his legacy, And she real proud of all of us. Driving past Huntington high school yesterday , I thought to myself how wonderful it would be if they named the football field in her honor.. Because there wasn't just a wing of a high school that had her energy... She was the leader of the Blue Devils and she was a proud beautiful soul who touched the lives of so many,. No resting in Paradise for you Linda
...strike up the band. Sound the trumpets. Make the the music play louder and in sync..we all stand a little taller and prouder because of you. God bless

Linda was a great mentor and teacher.
At Finley Linda asked if I was interested in learning to play the trombone and the rest is history.
I loved being at the end of the row in marching band as Linda relied on me to keep everyone’s step size the same.
Everything that Linda pushed me to learn has helped me throughout my life. If I did not have music high school would have been so difficult.
I will never forget Linda Shoemaker and her profound influence of my life.

Miss Shoemaker a wonderful woman, teacher and friend to all of her students, may you rest in peace. One of my memories is from J.T.F. when she found out that I was dropping out of band. She talked me into reconsidering my choice. When I asked why she explained that there was something special planned for H.H.S. band in the coming year. I’m glad that she talked me into never quitting as the 1979 Tournament of Roses parade was an awesome experience. Thank you Linda for all of the other memories of which there are so many to list. My deepest condolences to the family.

There is not enough space to truly convey how I felt about Miss Shoemaker. I will state this, for some reason she only called me “Breland.” She also knew I loved the sound of my bass clarinet and the uniform of the 1970s.
Thank you for allowing Maya to march with us in the alumni band. She is now a teenager who never forgot that wonderful experience. Thanks for the beautiful memories.

Ms. Shoemaker demanded excellence even from her JTF junior high bands, and she could be tough in rehearsal. But my best memory of her is the smile she would give us, and the attendant confidence, as we were just about to start a concert. She was a great educator and as a HS Coach and Teacher I hope I push my student-athletes the way she pushed us.

I graduated HHS in 1987 and I was very involved in band. Marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, orchestra and in the band for musicals. Complete band geek. Now when I think back to high school at the top of my memories are all the experiences I had involved with this group with Ms. Shoemaker heading it all. She's at the top of the teachers I remember from high school and I'm so thankful for all the memories (the trips are what my friends and I look back to the most and retell the stories.). I'm glad I got to reconnect with Linda via FaceBook and we traded our FB egg collection. My daughter is now involved in music in high school which has me reliving so many moments I had in similar circumstances. Now I'll always think of Linda as my daughter performs. Love to her and her family.

My deepest condolences to Linda's family. See has always been a very dear friend that I have known since my early elementary school years. Linda was an incredible teach, mentor and friend to me. She saw something in me that I never knew was there and helped boost my own self esteem. She made me feel like I was special at a time when I had no idea I was anyone special. I'll never forget her encouragement and the friendship she brought to my life. I'm so grateful to Facebook for bringing us back together after many years when we lost touch. I will forever be grateful for our recent visits and the memories we got to share. Thank you Linda, I'll always love you❤

Linda was a true leader. She taught me how to take pride in my work and to strive for something bigger than myself. It was honor being in the HHS Blue Devil Marching Band under her guidance.

Linda Shoemaker will live forever in the memories of thousands of alumni of Woodbury Avenue Elementary School, where she taught music, band and strings, and Huntington High School, where she directed the HHS Marching Band. In addition to being an accomplished musician and teacher, Linda was a friend, mentor and inspiration to generations of Huntington students. She will be fondly remembered, forever.
