My memories of mom will highlight her welcoming loving spirit, her generosity of heart, her sense of fashion and incredible elegance, and a penchant for storytelling.
I met Edwina on Thanksgiving in 1996. The house was bustling with many family members, Grandma Dot, her mother, Grandma Yank, her mother-in-law, and aunt Mary, her husband’s sister, who was also a dear friend were there. This is when I first met my brothers-in-law Rich and Brian, and my future sister-in-law, Lisa. And there was also a special man in her life, Tasi, who she introduced to the broader family for the first time. Edwina and her husband Steve’s best friends Connie and Ruth as well as their son were also invited. This was my mother-in-law's hospitality and devotion to her family. She welcomed me in a loving, very family-oriented and comfortable way, making me feel at home and from day one very much accepted as part of the Yank family, a family that she treasured so much.
Edwina was expressive in her affection to all of us with regular weekly calls, never missing a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or any other special occasion. She conveyed her love and affection not only through calls, in-person interactions, cards, and postcards, but also through her exquisite taste for picking gifts. Through her travels with Tasi she managed to select just the right item or two. She showered us with beautiful gifts. For me, these various gifts are joyful reminders of my generous mother-in-law, and they are ever present in my life. We recently decorated our Christmas tree with one ornament she got for us on her trip to Alaska and another one - an Irish clover ornament - in honor of her Irish American father. It is not the material value of these gifts but the memories of her and her love, that they invoke, that I will treasure. Her generosity was extended well beyond our family, through countless charitable contributions, kindness toward her friends, and by landing a helping hand to a stranger in need.
Mom was a beautiful woman on the inside and outside. Her impeccable sense of fashion and elegance was captured in many photos over the years. It was also very much reflected in mom’s ability to pick just the right color scheme for each of us daughters-in-law.
We have pictures of mom as a little girl with these gorgeous curls that Mommy Mae helped her fashion for the photo op. We are blessed that her beautiful hair was passed into the next generation. There is a memory of our son surprising Grandma with his blond hair coloring some years ago, when he was in middle school. Her facial expression when she saw his new hair style, was absolutely precious, showing both her surprise with the color as well as a tinge of very honest disapproval expressed in a question – "and who are you?" We have this moment captured in a photo.
She left us with so many wonderful memories of her and Tasi’s visits to our house, holidays spent together in Lawrenceville and Silver Spring, our visits to Huntington and East Hampton. Her lasting gifts are also the many stories that she shared of her childhood, her marriage to her husband Steve with their many job-related adventurous moves, and especially the stories of her three boys and their shenanigans while growing up.
Thank you, mom, for the gift of your love, and the many gifts that are constant reminders of your love, and the memories we share! I will miss your smile, your stories, and most of all your love.

The Voyage of the unknown brings moment of memories that will always imprints the power of God’s divine love when we learn to be obedient in the midst of uncertainty. Three months after losing my mother God sent me to take care of Mrs. Yank in November 2021, I was very submissive to the service with uttermost dedication, will and total love. Every moment spent with her was full of laughter, love and comfort, I always ensure that her 24 hrs. was well prepared and comforting so that her day finishes with peace and fulfilment. Her smile in the mornings was so radiant. she always said, “beautiful day”. with a bubbling smile. These three years with Mrs. Yank have taught me how powerful the mind can be when we are comfortable in the right atmosphere despite our ailments. I am sincerely grateful for the trust from her family to have that assurance that their mother was surrounded with pure love. Her family unconditional love brings happiness to her heart every time they visit as often as possible spending quality time talking, jollying on old times and vacations pictures. Awesome moments indeed, Sigh!! Her calm and observant spirit was so magnetic I would hug her before bed and tell her, thank you, Mrs. Yank! God loves you and she would say... Thank you and God bless you!
May her soul rest in God’s glory.
Tashna.
