Obituary of Ann Marie Fitzgerald

Please share a memory of Ann to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ann Marie Fitzgerald was born to the late T. Frank Elliot and Margaret Marie Kelly Elliott, an estate caretaker and a homemaker as well as a loyal employee of Uniroyal, in Woodbury, Connecticut on April 10, 1934. She graduated from Waterbury Catholic High School in 1952 and was awarded a full scholarship to the Pharmacy School at St. John’s University in Queens, NY.  While there, she met the love of her life, James Robert Fitzgerald, and they were married in May of 1957. After starting her family of four children, Ann resumed her professional career at Lydia E. Hall Hospital in 1974.  Until her retirement at age 65, she worked as a hospital pharmacist on Long Island at both Central Islip Hospital and Hempstead General Hospital.

While Ann enjoyed work and her many friends from those years, her passion was always her family. Hosting family holidays was a joy and no one’s birthday ever passed without her making a big celebration. From caring for elderly relatives, delivering groceries to Queens and the Bronx and arranging in-home care, she managed to work full-time while always being there for her husband and four children with a smile, compassion, wisdom and love.

One of Ann’s favorite places was the beach, and she spent many glorious days with friends, family and neighbors. From traveling with a car full of kids to Jones Beach Field 6 or lazing on the North Shore and Peconic Bay; to the beaches of St. Martin, as well as Ana Marie Island in Florida; Ann enjoyed them all.

Gardening was another pleasure and Ann had an amazing knack for reviving plants. Many a day was spent knee deep in dirt, planting Impatiens and Geraniums around her house. It was a hobby that gave her both satisfaction as well as peaceful relaxation.

Ann is survived by her husband, James; her sons Kevin (Mary Lou); Brian (Kerry); her daughters Tricia and Meg, and her seven grandchildren; Katie (Ian); Tommy (Haley); Maryanne; Hannah; Elliot, James and Noel. She will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to either the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Native American Heritage Association.
