Scannello, John S., 92, of Halesite, passed away on June 20, 2024. Beloved husband of Henrietta Schavran for 30 years and predeceased by his first wife Mary Grace Scannello. Loving father of John Scannello (Elizabeth), Nina Ferranti (Thomas), Michael Scannello, Susan Broderick (John), Gabrielle Schavran (Wanda Castaner) and Leslie Schavran. Cherished grandfather of 15 with 1 on the way, great-grandfather of 22 and great-great-grandfather of 1. Dear brother of Joseph (the late Sharon). He is loved and will be missed by his nieces, nephews, family and friends. Visitation Monday 7-9 PM and Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at M.A. Connell Funeral Home, 934 New York Ave., Huntington Station. Funeral Mass Wednesday, 10 AM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Centerport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to: American Cancer Society www.cancer.org in John’s name would be greatly appreciated by the family.
John Scannello passed away June 20, 2024 at the age of 92. Originally from Queens, John joined the Air Force and was stationed in Tennessee during the Korea War from 1951-1955. Subsequently he went on to City College to earn earn a degree in engineering. He had a successful career in Grumman rising to the position of Director and traveling internationally.
He joined the Huntington Yacht Club in 1984 and was active in many committees and club activities over the years. He was elected Commodore in 1994, the year of the club’s 100th anniversary. During his years of boating with the yacht club, he owned and sailed a Pearson for a decade and then in 1993 started cruising with his Mainship, the Nina Sue. Over the following 25 years John enjoyed cruising with other members throughout New England, including exploring the Hudson River up to Lake Champlain, Nantucket Island, Newport RI and many ports around Long Island Sound.
John was an active member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary's Flotilla 2201 for close to 30 years. He was committed to promoting safe boating to the Huntington Community.
John is survived by his spouse Henrietta, his children John, Nina, Michael, Sue, Gabrielle and Leslie and their spouses. He has 15 grandchildren, and 22 great grand children and 1 great great grandchild with 1 one on the way.
