Obituary of Elvira Anne Carminati

Please share a memory of Elvira to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Elvira (Vera) Carminati of Huntington passed away peacefully at her home on June 16, 2024, at the age of 95.  She was born Elvira Maura on January 5, 1929, to Joseph and Penny Maura.  Elvira later graduated from Huntington High School in 1947 and married Anthony L. Carminati, Sr. on October 20, 1951.

After getting married, Vera lived with her husband who was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan for a few years after World War II.  Shortly after returning to the United States, she began her most important role as a caregiver and stay-at-home mother.  First for her two children, then her parents, husband and several relatives.

Vera’s love of shopping was one of her greatest joys.  While in Japan, she quickly learned to barter with local merchants and enjoyed the thrill of the hunt for great bargains more than she did the actual purchase.  Macy’s, A & S, Lord and Taylor or Marshalls were frequent haunts and her children often joked that they were raised in those stores.  She loved shopping for baby clothes and with five grandchildren and five great grandchildren it kept her busy.

Vera was also known for being the seamstress/alteration specialist of the family.  Often hemming or repairing pants, dresses, uniforms or curtains.  She enjoyed a good meal, cooking and making a family requested favorite “deviled eggs”.  When not busy with these tasks, she enjoyed watching football, baseball, Hallmark movies, reruns of Perry Mason, Gunsmoke and Wagon Train.  Later in life Vera became an avid reader and enjoyed completing Word Search puzzles.

Elvira is predeceased by her parents (Joe and Penny), husband (Anthony Sr.), three brothers (Lindy, Harry and John Maura) and a sister (Betty Miles).  She is survived by two sons, Anthony Jr. (Jane) and Jeffrey (Deb); five grandchildren, Anthony III (Christina), Rebecca (Joe), Kristin, Stephanie (Jim), Jeffrey Jr.; five great grandchildren, Mia, Leonidas, Mila, Oliver and Joanna as well as two sisters, Irene Goggin and Maryann Cohen.

Services will be held at M. A. Connell Funeral Home on Sunday, June 23, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.  Vera will be interred next to her husband of over 40 years (Tony) in Calverton National Cemetery on Monday morning June 24, 2024.  May they lie together in peace and continue to watch over us.
