I've always thought of my Aunt Shirley's serene calmness as the counterpoint to my Uncle Bruno's "force of nature" demeanor. I loved to see the way they interacted—the resolute but delicate tree bending with the strong wind; and I loved to hear the passion and gratitude she had for life, knowledge, and the natural world in her voice, and see the kindness and tranquility that shone in her eyes at all times. She imparted empathy and wisdom in every conversation I had with her. I will miss those chats that could touch on so may subjects at one time and leave me pondering, and I will miss her deeply as well.

I lived close to Shirley growing up in Forest Hills,N.Y. I loved going to see my Best friend Rosalie . Her mom, Shirley was like a second mom to me at the time. I wished my Mom was more like Rosalie’s mom . Shirley was always so fun and welcoming . I still remember her energy in her voice . Although this is over 50 years ago , Shirley’s love for her daughter remains very active in my mind . She was always happy to facilitate our friendship by picking us up and taking us places ..

I believe we shared an appreciation of nature’s nuance, the whisper of her unseen shivering leaves in the darkness of her holy, shimmering nights. This is why I know my Aunt Shirley’s Spirit is still very much in Presence here inside the Home of our own precious Souls; and I for one, am ever thankful for all of my concersations with her about the Mystery and the Magic. -Robert Soc
