Obituary of Sally Ann Young

Please share a memory of Sally to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Sally Ann Young of Huntington Station died on October 19, 2023 at the age of 87.  She was born in Riverhead and her family moved to Huntington Station when she was a child.  She attended St. Hugh of Lincoln grammar school and was a member of the parish of St. Hugh for over 80 years.  After completing her secondary education at Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn, she went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree at the State Teachers College at New Paltz and embarked on a teaching career in the West Babylon school district that lasted over 35 years.  Early in her career she earned her Master’s degree from Hofstra University, and was in so many ways a lifelong learner.

She enjoyed traveling all over the United States, and especially exploring the National Parks.  In addition, she traveled internationally, heading east to Europe and west (and south!) to Australia and New Zealand.  She enjoyed spending time with friends, not only traveling, but also in golf leagues, bowling leagues, contract Bridge games, reading groups, and many other pastimes.  She was a wonderful cook, known especially for her delicious blueberry pie.

She was generous with her time, volunteering in many ways at St. Hugh’s.  She served as a Eucharistic Minister, comforted grieving families in the Lazarus Ministry, and for many years visited the sick at Carillon Nursing home every Friday.  After retiring from teaching, she made time in her schedule to attend Daily Mass.

Sally was the youngest of three siblings and was predeceased by her sister, Mary Lillian Mulligan in 1982, and her brother, Charles Henry Young, in 2017.  She is survived by her nephew and godson, John Mulligan; his children Karyn (Reid) Scruggs and John (Lori Joy) Mulligan; and his grandchildren Cierra Yusko and Gabriel, Gavin, Greyson, and Gibson Mulligan.  She is also survived by her nephew Michael (Anne-Marie) Mulligan; their children Elizabeth (Jamie) Lineweaver and Daniel Mulligan; and their grandson, Elden Lineweaver.  She leaves behind many friends who join with her family in mourning her passing while also recalling many fond memories of a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity to keep Sally’s generous spirit alive.
