Obituary of John Joseph Downes

John Downes, 56, passed away unexpectedly on May 23, 2023. John was born on July 14, 1966, in Huntington, NY, where he spent his childhood. Growing up, he loved baseball and football; he was a star athlete in every sport he played. In junior high school, he was on the gymnastics team. In high school, he was a running back on the junior varsity and varsity John Glenn football teams, and he also played baseball as a pitcher and shortstop for the John Glenn Knights.
He went to college in South Carolina at Coastal Carolina University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in business. There, he met and married his southern bell, Tracy. After his fathers passing, he made a promise to always take care of his mother, so they came back to New York and lived on Long Island.
John was a wonderful person who has touched so many lives. He was an amazing athlete, smart, funny, caring, and compassionate. He was a very hard worker and always found time to help others. His love for his friends and family was always his number one priority, especially his mother with whom he had lived for most of his life. His love and support for her was endless.
John was surrounded by his devoted and loving mother, Alvina, and his loving former wife, Tracie Batten-Downes, at the time of his passing.
John was predeceased by his beloved father, Jerry Downes, and his first wife,
Tracy Downes.
He is survived by his beloved mother, Alvina Downes; his loving brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Suzanne Downes; his former wife Tracie Batten-Downes; his cherished nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews; and so many other friend and family members whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 4th, 2023, from 2pm-4pm and from 7:00pm-9:00pm at The M.A Connell Funeral Home Inc (934 New York Avenue, Huntington Station NY 11746.)
A religious service will be held at M.A. Connell Funeral Home on Monday June 5th, 2023, at 10:00AM. (Doors will be open at 9:30AM.)
Immediately following will be the interment at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
