Obituary of Marion Virginia Bechdol

Please share a memory of Marion to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Bechdol, Marion Virginia, 100, of Huntington, passed away on May 7th, 2023. Beloved wife of the late John. Loving mother of John (Karen) and Susan Lyons (Patrick). Adoring grandmother of Janelle, Anthony, Kelly, Jane, Diana, Keenan, and Katharine. Dear sister of Rose Adamowicz and Richard Kessler. Brothers Marty and Joseph, and sister Ella, pre-deceased her.

Marion was born in New York City and raised in Maspeth, Queens.  She was the eldest of 6 children. Always the big sister, she was the one that her siblings could count on.

In 1952 she married her love John Bechdol, from Brooklyn. This Brooklyn-Queens relationship began in New York City where they met at work. Marion worked for the boss and John quickly took notice. After several years of dating and a big thumbs up from Marion’s Dad, they married and moved to Roslyn, ultimately moving to Huntington where they made their home with their two children since 1961. She was the Mom who took her children to swim lessons every summer at West Neck Beach, who packed the beautiful picnic lunches on trips to the Catskills and was the loving mother who always was a presence in her children’s lives. As time went on she became the Grandmother to 7 grandchildren and relished the many memories made over the years with her grandchildren who currently range in age from 10 to 37. She was the quintessential Grandma.

Marion was a homemaker, a wonderful neighbor and friend. After years of raising a family Marion took to many various activities such as bowling, a woman’s club but her most impactful pastime was volunteering with the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk. For over 35 years she gave her time and talent in the thrift shop to raise funds to support this organization.  It was only fitting that she spent the last few days of her life in the Hospice House in Northport, surrounded by her family and the most supportive VNSHS Nurses and Staff. Marion will always be cherished and greatly missed by all.
