Obituary of John J. Malone, Jr.

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jack Malone was born in Brooklyn on January 17, 1932, the only child of Margaret and John Malone. He grew up in Flatbush and got “sand in his shoes” at age 6 months in Breezy Point. He attended St. Jerome’s Elementary School,  Brooklyn Prep, Colby Academy, St. John's University and the McAllister School of Mortuary Science.  In 1952 at age 20, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 1st Armored Division as a tanker stationed in Fort Knox, KY and Baumholder, Germany. Following his time in the Army, Jack was a U.S, Air Force Reserve Special Agent in the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) with a Top Secret clearance.  Jack wore many hats in life following his time in the military. He was a funeral director for the family business, Malone Funeral Home, in Flatbush. He was a criminal investigator for the Rackets Bureau of the Kings County District Attorney's Office, a mortgage and loan officer with Long Island Trust Company (Bank of New York) and American Bank and Trust Company, a senior executive with McFarland-Johnson Engineers, Inc. and the President of EMJ Construction Consultants. Prior to retiring, he was the Parish Manager for St. Edward the Confessor in Syosset, NY.

A 50-year parishioner of St. Patrick Parish in Huntington, he served several years on the St. Patrick School Board. Jack was a life member of the Knights of Columbus - Gates of Heaven Council, a 4th Degree Sir Knight – LI General Assembly, a Charter Member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Long Island, a Past Commander of St. Jerome Memorial Post 1518 of the Catholic War Veterans, former officer of the Head of the Bay Club, the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, and the Long Island Board of Realtors.

Jack was not a man defined by his career but rather by his family. He met his wife Beverly at the Surf Club in Breezy Point in 1963 and they were married in May 1965. They headed east from Brooklyn and in March 1973 settled in Huntington, Long Island, where they raised their family. In his own words, "my greatest asset is my beloved wife of 58 years, Beverly, and our 6 children" - Megan Lanahan (Kevin), Annemarie Lapham (Sean), John Malone III (Susan), Kevin Malone, Andrew Malone (Kerri), and Brian Malone (Sara), all of whom he was very proud. His true love in life was spending time with his 15 grandchildren ranging in age from 3 to 25, whom he absolutely loved and adored.  His infectious laugh and smile made everyone feel welcome in his presence and endeared him to all those he met. He will forever remain Reinwald Bakery's #1 customer as for him, nothing beat a cup of black coffee and a danish. Jack's strength, resilience and fortitude is an inspiration to his family, to whom his devotion and love will never be forgotten. He passed peacefully with his wife by his side and will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, the Malone family requests donations in Jack’s memory to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (https://t2t.org/donate/) or Seminary of the Immaculate Conception (https://www.icseminary.edu/giving.html).
