Obituary of Deacon Vito Benedict Taranto

Please share a memory of Deacon Vito to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Deacon Vito Taranto, 86, of Huntington Station, NY, passed peacefully on December 25, 2022. Beloved husband of the late MaryAnn for 63 years. Devoted father of Anthony (Josephine), the late Carolynn, the late Thomas (Kathleen), Steven (Laura), and Catherine (Robert). Beloved brother to the late Joseph (Carolyn). Adoring grandfather to Christina (Jo), Megan, Theresa, James, Gregory, Brandon, Carolanne, Tina, and Christian and a great-grandfather of 6.

Vito was born in Bronx, NY to Sarah and Anthony in 1936. Vito honorably served in the United States Marines. He received his master's from SUNY Post. Vito took the Long Island Railroad with MaryAnn, where he was an accountant for JCPenny. After his retirement, he went to work for Hulse as an accountant.

Vito was ordained as a Deacon in May 1986, and he served his community at St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church in Huntington Station for over 35 years. He was an avid football and baseball fan. He always cheered for the underdog. He loved music, especially John Denver. He was known for being a goofball, pulling pranks, and sharing silly jokes. He had quite the sweet tooth. He loved marshmallow easter eggs and was known to barter with his grandkids to get theirs too. When you pulled down a coffee mug, you never know what goodie he might have hidden in there.

Vito instilled in his family kindness and the importance of community and faith. His humor and embrace made him the loving man we all adore. His commitment to his community and family is everlasting. The love that is shared within the community for Vito shows the magnitude of the lives he has touched. He is loved and will be missed dearly.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church, Huntington Station, NY.
