I could never decide whether to call him Dr. Hershberger or David. My brother is Dave, my husband is David (to me) and Dr. Hershberger always seemed too formal.
I always looked forward to my appointments with him and brought my twins to him as soon as they needed eye care. He treated them with respect and concern, always.
Now me, that's another story. His humor is right along the lines of my own. A bit sarcastic but not hurtful at all, laughing at his own jokes, so we shared many laughs.
One of my favorite and funniest incidents with David was when I was in his office for an exam and after he holds the lens up to my eye and checks behind the whatever, there's a loud ringing/buzzing sound and I'm immediately on alert and I start grabbing my shirt, my belt, my belly, my bra, everywhere I could think of, to grab my insulin pump and turn off the alarm. So then I happen to look up and I see my dear Dr. Hershberger jumping around and grabbing his arms and pockets and whatevers jumping around and our eyes met and he said "Tandem" ? and I started laughing uncontrollably as we both were looking for our insulin pumps to turn them off and see what alarm we were getting.
David was kind, smart, sparkling, funny. He once made a faux pas with us as his last patients of a long day and when he realized it, he was so apologetic and self-honest, it showed his beautiful spirit.
I lost my husband to a drunk driver when my twins were two, and I didn't know how I (we) could make it through. My kids are now turning 21 in July and I know how we did it. The family members who were old enough to feel the grief let it come. And I put one foot in front of the other, leaned on the arms and strength of our friends and others who loved us, and believed. Not necessarily in g-d, but in the goodness of the world. And I will never forget the gifts of spirit and heart we were given. Make sure your heart is open to receive them and I wish for you that even in your grief, David is part of your journey. May you and your children heal, and all who loved David realize that death can't damage the love or take it away. It will always be there to hold onto.
Even though I don't know you, I send my love and hope David is still bringing a smile to people's faces, wherever and in whatever form he happens to be.

I was a patient of Dr. Hershberger's. I went to him first when I had a corneal ulcer and I couldn't even open my eye. His calm demeanor and obvious wealth of knowledge immediately put me at ease. I was so grateful for his care and though I only saw him 2 or 3 times, I always looked forward to my appointments. I was very sad to learn of his passing as I switched insurance carriers and attempted to find out he was in-network. I hope is family has some peace knowing how many lives he's touched.

Dr. Hershberger was a personable, caring, thorough physician who always took time to talk and answer questions and concerns. We had our last checkups with him before retiring to NC. We just received his office’s letter concerning his passing and are stunned. May he rest in peace and may his young family find comfort knowing how much his dedication meant to his patients.

I HATE doctors…..but I loved Dr. Hirshberger. I would hear him talking and laughing before he entered the examine room, and it always made me smile.
During one particular visit, I mentioned that I didn’t see things clearly. In his typical kind manner, Dr Hirshberger gave me some medical reasons that even I knew were stretches. Finally, I said, “Doctor, are you trying to tell me in a nice way that I have Old Lady Eyes and just deal with it?”
He seemed surprised at first, but then burst out laughing and we both enjoyed quite a chuckle.
So sorry for the Family’s loss…….he’s truly a loss to the Medical Profession.

He was my physician. So nice. Came in on a Sunday because I might have had a retinal detachment. He was the only opthalmologist to think to do a retinal scan and he uncovered a condition, ERM in my eyes that is very useful to know before I have cataract surgery. Expected him to operate on me one day for that. Deepest sympathies. M J Feld

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Hershberger. I met him in the emergency room at Huntington Hospital about 10 years ago. I basically had a strobe in my eye when I was 35 years old. He opened his office up at 1am so he could do more testing. I was blind in one eye for 3 weeks. He said I dodged a bullet. He was such a great Dr. Wish all Drs were like him. Don’t know what happened but it seems to only happen to the good ones. He will be missed.

After my visit with Dr. David I went home and could not stop raving about the Dr. to my husband.
Dr. David was wonderful human being and great physician. He took his time to explain my ailment in great depth.
Not once did I feel pressured to leave until all my questions were answered.

We were shocked and profoundly saddened to hear the news of Dr. Hershberger's death. We would say we were just his patients but nobody who came for his expert care was "just a patient". We were welcomed into his world and he was part of ours.
We looked forward to our yearly checkups. We heard his lively step as he arrived at the exam room: hand stretched out in warm greeting; maybe a black t shirt; beard (varied lengths or none at all). We'd catch up on the year that had passed and lively conversation ensued. Almost any topic was up for grabs. Maybe a joke. Maybe a riddle. And always, his terrific sense of humor.
We could imagine him as the young student whose classmate brought a cow's eye to class (we think we remember that is was a cow) and to him "it was the most elegant thing I'd ever seen". He still seemed to think so.
We had the utmost respect for him. He was a caring and beautiful human being and an outstanding physician. He will be sorely missed.
We send our deepest condolences to his beloved family. He was so proud of you.
