The first thing you think of when you think of Aunt Bernice, is her loving smile, you felt so warm and welcome just with that smile, followed by the best hug in the world. She was beautiful inside and out. Growing up, I always compared her to the character Marlo Thomas played on "That Girl" - sophisticated, "girly" , pretty, and yet "strong". We visited Aunt Bernice and Uncle Johnny in Flushing very often, I looked forward to those visits every single time. Aunt Bernice taught us simple songs to play on the piano, gave us games to play, it was always fun there. She brought us to the city to see movies, Broadway shows, museums, Bloomingdales ....She gave me the gift of seeing the Sound of Music at Radio City Music Hall. It's been my favorite movie ever since. She gave us so much, and the love she gave out to everyone was endless. Some of my favorite memories are the "girl cousin" sleep overs we had there - the best one was when we all got "I Dream of Jeannie" PJs. They were the coolest thing I ever wore! I felt magical. That's the "gift" Aunt Bernice had, making you feel special. Let's not forget to mention of course the back rubs! No one on this earth could rub a knot out of your back like she could! It's not surprising that she became a nurse. She always wanted to help everyone, even strangers. She was the reason I became a nurse. I was always amazed at her energy. She was an amazing nurse. Aunt Bernice and I also shared a love for tennis, whether we played at the park in Flushing, or at the court by Grandma and Grandpa's house in Florida, she ALWAYS had more energy than me and ran circles around me on the tennis court!! But it was still fun! She also took me to the US Open for my first and only time. I can't leave out going out on Uncle Johnny's boat..... Before getting to the boat, we always stopped at the bakery/deli by the docks. That was the best part about going fishing, all the yummy food she brought! Cold cuts, fresh baked rolls, jelly donuts, soda and the unforgettable black and white cookies! Thank goodness I never suffered from sea sickness! Forever I will have endless love in my heart that came from my Aunt Bernice. If I summed everything up in one word, it truly would be Love. Love you Aunt Bernice. I'll be waiting to get my hug again from you. xo
