Marie P. Basti Obituary

On Sunday, July 17, 2022 Marie P. Basti passed away at the age of 96.  Marie was born on September 2, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York to Rose and John Basti. She was predeceased by her two siblings and their spouses, Gloria Meehan (Thomas) and Thomas Basti (Theresa). Marie is survived by her brother-in-law, John J. Meehan (Jack) and her beloved nieces and their spouses, Catherine and Douglas DiVello and Ann Marie and John Marx; and her grand-nieces and nephew, Jocelyn and Evan Marx, Sarah and Hope DiVello; and countless coworkers, neighbors, and friends whom she held close to her heart. If you had the good fortune to meet Marie you often would leave her presence with a Hershey chocolate bar in your pocket and a smile on your face.

Marie was part of the U.S. Cadet Marine Corps program and received her Nursing degree from St. Catherine’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She later went on to achieve her Bachelor of Science degree from St. John’s University (1956) and completed her Master of Science degree from Adelphi University (1966). She dedicated her life to nursing, beginning her career at the Northport VA and retiring from the Manhattan VA as Chief of Staff of Nursing. During her illustrious career, which spanned 40 years, she was a champion of all caretakers, especially nurses. She was known as “small but mighty” and continually recognized the good in others, and the dedication of all those in the nursing profession.

Marie had a vibrant and energetic personality that drew people in from the moment they met her. She would always encourage and celebrate each and everyone’s accomplishments. She loved gardening and crafts and celebrating every holiday with family. Marie’s compassionate spirit, kind heart, and unending positivity touched all those who knew her.
