Mr. Engel. As I remember, his was the only Corvette in the teachers parking lot at Berry Hill. Other teachers had regular, dowdy cars. A young guy (but most teachers were early thirties back then, some were younger), dedicated, sincere, and made sure you WALKED YOUR BIKE to the bike stands once on school grounds. He didn’t give you a hard time if you weren’t athletic. As long as you showed you were trying. This is when elementary schools still had rope-climbing in the gym. It is trivial but of all the mental quotes I still keep in my head I remember “only climb up so far as you can still come down hand over hand”. I was tall and gangly and could hardly get off the ground, so the issue never arose for me, but it sticks for some reason. A good guy.

I first met Marty back in the late 70's as were both dabbling in stamps (collectible type). I would meet with him during the stamp shows we attended on Sunday's to do some horse-trading. I frequently went to his house to chat with him and Marilyn and do some more horse-trading. This continued throughout the years and Marty was one of the few people I could actually call a friend. After I left New York we stayed in touch by phone over the years and I still kept in touch up until recently. I will miss his wry sense of humor and just having him to talk to and bounce ideas off, which I did on occasion. So long, my friend. Until we meet again one day.
