Obituary of Michael J. Garvey

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sadness the family of Michael James Garvey of Huntington, NY , announces his passing from us peacefully on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at the age of 80. Loving known as husband, dad, pop-pop, Uncle Mikie, life-long friend, and best big brother, Michael had an infectious laugh that couldn’t help but make a person smile themselves when they heard it. He was born in New York City on April 26, 1941 to the late Michael James and Catherine Matilda (née Tully). Mikie’s strong faith in God and determined hard work led Mike from humble beginnings to earn a Bachelors of Mathematics from Hunter College and a 30 year career with IBM as a mainframe programmer, all while raising a growing family of five children. Most important in his life was his relationships. They were with God, his family and his friends. Mike always made time to check in with those he cared about and loved, just making sure they were okay. And, if they weren’t okay, what could he do to help. And, never a Sunday went by without him keeping strong his faith in God at mass. Life after retirement was simple and good. Time was spent volunteer-driving the elderly, reading his beloved books at the library, a great bike ride here and there, family and all while staying in touch with those he loved near and far. His wife Joan (née Saclayan) and children Catherine, Michael (Martha), Sean, Brian (Rene), and Frank ( Maegan) are left with his love and blessings, that is for sure. We know his grandchildren, Chloe, Mikie, Ryan, Caitlyn, Madison, Jenna, Charlotte, Madeline , Eloise, and, his great-grandsons Joseph and Derek, are being watched over by their Pop-pop with loving eyes. He leaves behind his love and blessings as well to his sister Rose (Osorio), nieces, nephews, beloved cousins and beautiful friends. In addition to his parents, Mike has joined his late brother John Garvey and grandson Ian Garvey, along with other beloved family members and dearest friends in the company of God. The family will receive visitors on Friday, December 10, between 2-4 pm and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial is at 9 am at St. Patrick’s Church, 400 Main Street, Huntington, NY. Interment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Huntington, NY.
