So saddened to learn of Irene's passing. My daughter & I will sincerely miss our visits to her. So thankful we had the opportunity to see her in May and plant the flowers she loved to tend to in her yard. She will be missed by all. We consider ourselves blessed for having known her. May she rest in peace. Nancy & Lila Freire

Irene was a friend of more than 40 years. I loved the Washington Post article that Raj wrote about her. But perhaps because I worked longer with her and had a longer friendship, although I think I agreed with everything he wrote, I had a different perspective. Irene Eckert was a character par excellence. Consequently, the late Mike Barbera (who was a good friend of both of ours) and I often razzed her. If there is a heaven and if Mike and Irene are both there (out of respect I suppose I should say since they are both there - for they were both highly principled very good people,) Mike started giving her the business the moment she arrived. And she started giving it back to him immediately.
I'm a little reluctant to cite some of the instances that illustrate how Irene was a character. There was a nuance to her behavior and her words which is hard to describe in writing. I will miss her a great deal, miss the personal conversations we had. I will miss exchanging takes about the people whom we both knew - --; and so on

Irene was an integral part of the Huntington and Huntington Public Library communities. She shared her joy in, and knowledge of, classic films with staff and patrons alike via her movie discussion programs and could always be counted upon for a pithy insight into one of the mysteries under discussion in our mystery discussion group (the Kiss Me Kill Me gang!) But, most of all, Irene relished life and her wonderful relationships with friends and family. We will certainly miss Irene here at the library and thank her family for sharing her with us over the years! We wish you all peace and comfort in the days to come and hope that, as time goes by, memories of Irene's enthusiasm and personality bring a smile to your face.

Irene and I remained friends long after retirement, sharing a pride and love for all things Italian. She generously shared her knowledge of Italian films and culture with the Sons of Italy lodges, inspiring us, reminiscing, telling fabulous stories. She will be truly missed. RIP, bella - ti vogliamo bene.

As a colleague of Irene’s for many years at NHS! There were many laughs and smiles but nothing was more important to her than her students! Irene had a huge heart! Her legacy will be for us to live life to the fullest and laugh!

As a colleague and as a friend, Irene was an inspiration. For her zest for life, for her instant connection with others, for her love of learning and of adventure, for her good will, and for her indomitable spirit and fearlessness - about everything. And for her voice, which could penetrate walls - "Fran, why don't you come to my movies??!" She is irreplaceable.
I am truly sorry that we have lost her.
My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

I love and miss you very much Mom, my first friend, my best friend!! I was truly BLESSED that God chose you to be my Mother. There is a huge gapping hole in my heart, but I am comforted knowing that my beloved husband and your adoring son in law welcomed you with open arms into heaven. I will make you both proud as I continue this journey on earth without the both of you! All my love till we meet again, your loving daughter, Michelle “Mickey”
