Obituary of Matthew Cahaney

Matthew Leslie Cahaney, 67, the beloved eldest son of the late Myra (Long) and George Roger Cahaney, passed away at his home on January 17, 2021. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Matt was a lifelong Long Islander, living only for a brief time in Santa Clara, California. He was a 1971 graduate of Cold Spring Harbor High School, a National Merit Scholar, a National Honor Society member and lettered in golf and wrestling during his senior year. He was retired since 2016 from Cablevision after a long career as a projectionist. Many knew Matt as an avid chess player, mathematician or golfer who generously shared his knowledge with patience and enthusiasm. He leaves behind his sisters Nan (Kevin) Smith and Dara (Gerry) Christensen and his brothers Tim (Patty) and Mark (Gail) and their families, including 9 nieces and nephews and one grandnephew, and many devoted friends and supporters, the DeFeos and Dolans among them. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels.
