Obituary of Frederick H. Schmauch

Dr. Frederick Hugo Schmauch; loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on April 20th, 2021 at the age of 82 in Huntington, NY surrounded by his family. Fred was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1939 to Oscar and Johanna Schmauch who emigrated from Germany in the 1920’s. Lovingly survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy Schmauch, whom he met at St. Johns University in 1961 while he was a teaching fellow. Fred is survived and celebrated by his 4 children; Kathy (Jack) DiMaio, Lauren Schmauch, Bill (Mandi) Schmauch, John (Candace Camarata) Schmauch and 5 grandchildren; Jack, Sarah, Tanner, Liesel and Kellan. Fred was raised in Woodhaven, NY and attended Richmond Hill High School prior to attending NYU, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He then went to St. Johns University and was awarded his masters and PhD in History. Fred and Judy moved to Huntington where he started his career as a Social Studies teacher at Walt Whitman High School and retired after 32 years as the Assistant Principal. Fred was then a private consultant in South Huntington schools fulfilling many administrative roles within the district. Fred was known for his unique ability to project his wisdom, compassion and empathy to the thousands of students he impacted over his career. While Fred’s mission in life was to educate and guide both his students and his children, his passion was his family. He is celebrated for love of his gardens and the ocean, history, reading, and family traditions. His compassion and moral compass were steadfast and his laughter was contagious but he will be most remembered for his giant heart and love that he shared with many. Saying he is sorely missed is an understatement. Fred’s life will be celebrated. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's name can be made to The Alzheimer's Association, or to St. Francis Hospital.
