I just found out Mr I passed. When I was a freshman at St Mary’s in 1993, he asked to speak to me after class about a poem I wrote that was depressing, he expressed concern for me. Never ever have I forgot that. He cared, I was depressed and struggling. He was an exceptional teacher, a caring person and a dynamic human. I saw him last at the last Sports Night, and he remembered me. I never forgot him. Turns out expression would be my life’s work, I’m a therapist. And creative expression is what I do every day and encourage my patients to do. God bless him, his family and all his students. We were so lucky to know him and have him as a teacher.

Rest in power to a teacher who taught me the things I could not learn in a classroom like confidence and self advocacy. A teacher who was one of my biggest supports throughout high school, someone who made me laugh during troubling times. Thank you for being you! You will be missed greatly <3

Please accept my deepest condolences. Mr. I was one of my favorite teachers. He made learning fun. I was very shy in high school. He helped me to come out of my shell. He used to let me help him grade papers and we would talk about everything. He got me through some tough times. He was an amazing person and will be greatly missed. You are all in my prayers.

Please accept my sympathy on the passing of Joe. I worked with him for many years at St. Mary's High School, and I am deeply saddened by his passing. "Mr. I" was always willing to help if we had a sporting event or school activity. He encouraged his students and was proud of his family. God bless him and may he rest in peace. Sincerely, Mary Cornell

To the Ilnitzky Family:
We are so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing.. we were devastated when we heard he had passed. Our son Anthony was a student at St.Mary’s (2015 - 2019) and we loved Mr. I. He had taken out son under his wing and encouraged him to join him in broadcasting the St. Mary’s games. He saw talent in hits voice and mentored Anthony into his love of broadcasting which he still does today with WFUV at Fordham. Mr. I instilled confidence in him and we loved seeing them both at the games. We are deeply saddened but wanted you all to know how much he meant to our family. Sending prayers to you all- Charles and Lisa Alaimo
