Demetra (Lukos) Vam Vikites, 1932-2020
Demetra passed away peacefully on November 1, 2020. She was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada to Eurydice and Kostas Lukos. After attending high school, she worked in Windsor as a bookkeeper and hat-check girl at her father’s restaurant. It was at the restaurant that she met the love of her life and future husband, Abraham, who was serving in nearby Mount Clemens, Michigan as a band member at the Selfridge Air National Guard base. Demetra and Abraham married in 1953, and in 1959 they moved with their two children to Huntington, NY. Demetra was a homemaker and loving mother. Her willingness to always listen coupled with her good sense of humor made her someone that her children and grandchild always wanted to be around.
When her children were older, she took a job at Macy’s, a position that she greatly enjoyed and held for many years. Mom also loved spending time with her granddaughter, Hannah. Together they would play games, tell each other jokes and stories, and you could hear their laughter throughout the house. Mom was fond of animals, for many years she traveled from Windsor to New York with her cherished cat, Mocha, in her lap. For the last several years, mom enjoyed watching the activities in the popular park across the street from where she lived. She kept close tabs on the swans and their babies that hatched each year in the park’s pond.
Mom loved to knit and she loved to play games. She was unbeatable at Scrabble and consistently raked in scores that would challenge the best players. She also was an avid reader and always enjoyed learning and discussing current events, history, and the books and articles she had recently read. One of her greatest pleasures was music. Her daughters remember their house being filled with music from mom’s piano playing, Dad’s trumpet playing, and their parents many jazz and classical music albums.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was predeceased by her sisters Lita McCarroll-Rodery and Anastasia Lukos and brother Harry Lukos. She is survived by her husband Abraham, daughters Karen Kambouris (John) and Debra VamVikites (Michael Cain), and granddaughter Hannah Cain. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
