Love you, I have tracked your history, wow I had no idea you were an author of amazing skill too, and vastly different topics. Blob King we all miss you. Until we see you again. It took me minutes to find your IMF trail, oh I wish I'd of found this sooner so I could have reached out in person. Sincerely your friend, DSR: Wyatt Washburn. Most people didn't even know what a Grothar was. :)

I had learned about George's (or "Grothar" as we Wundergrounders used to refer to him as) passing when it was first announced to the Weather Underground community in which he was a vital cornerstone of, and I must say, I do feel a little guilty for just getting around to doing this. However, knowing the type of amazing human being George was, I do not think he would have minded this at all. I really feel like I cannot be on this page without leaving a little something.
George and I would frequently chatter when we had the opportunity to; despite the age gap we had a great relationship, and he was one of the guys I really looked up to on Weather Underground. But then again this clearly was not a feeling exclusive to me as he was in good terms with virtually everyone on WU. That is how wonderful of a person he was. Every time he would log on he would brighten everyone's day and lighten the mood on the blog even during the tensest of times. He made everyone's faces light up with joy, and you can bet that whenever he was posting, we were all listening. And honestly I have never seen anyone leave such profound impact like that with their mere presence ever before on any online community.
My sincerest condolences go out to his family. Thank you for blogging with us, Gro. and may we forever continue the legend of Blobcon in your honor.

Thanks to you and your family who had to loose a lot of time with you due to your weather habit but now they know how appreciated you were by so many others who they may never meet.

I have lurked and posted on the WU blog since around the time of Katrina and have had George (Gro) correct me gently many times. He had the amazing ability to smack one across the side of the head for stupidity and not have it hurt. Such a gentle gentleman. He was a wonderful friend and mentor to so many of us. Since the begining Grothar was that amazing person that always has kind worlds for everybody bringing also his jokes and knowlodges for someone who ask for help. It is heartening to see all the love that one human being can create in a lifetime. As I read these tributes, I envy those of you who knew George in 'real' life. For us on 'that weather blog' he was Grothar, a personality that allowed us all to grow into better people, even though most of us never had a chance to meet him in person.
Condolences to his family. For the Weather Blog he will always be remembered as a light of hope and of love. May he rest in peace.

I am something of a bookworm.
I was a long time lurker, but started posting winter photos and a few comments by 2015.
In 2017 (I think it was...) the blog was ending and moving on to cat6. Everyone was jumping ship.
Keep said it was just a change, still the same community.
Gro sent me a WUmail to encourage me to stay.
I stayed, and I don't regret it. Grothar's wit and wisdom was often on display.
The last book he suggested was James Joyce, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"
I got the book, and read it, even though it was from a far away place and time, and unfamiliar culture and language, a bit of a difficult read. Since he suggested it, I read the whole thing assiduously.
And I wanted to ask Gro why that book. I never did find out why.
He made us all feel like personal friends in his own personal way.

"Gro", as he was affectionately known in our Wunderground [Weather Underground] circles, was the best of us. He inspired, cajoled, chivvied, encouraged, reprimanded, teased, educated and supported us all, from the old fogies to the young twigs, Americans, Caribbean islanders, and far-flung tropical weather aficionados of the world alike, all as one big family under his care and supervision. His humour, compassion, wisdom and courage in the face of challenging circumstances are his legacy to us, and we are grateful - grateful to have known him, to have partaken of the cup of life and learning at his side.
In the islands we often sing our farewell to a loved one gone before,
Lay down my dear brother
Lay down and take your rest
We love you, but Jesus loves you the best
We bid you good night, goodnight, goodnight.

I knew you as Grothar. From the time I was on that weather blog in 2005 I considered you a friend. You were a perfect example of what someone should be. Kind, caring, compassionate, someone who was more concerned about making us laugh if you knew times were tough. I had health issues too and you made me feel alright about them, and that's more than I can say about many people. You coined the meteorological term "blob" and it will stick in the community forever. Even though I never met you, you were my friend. And I'll always cherish the memories we made. You always knew how to make us laugh, and that is so rare now a days. Rest in peace sweet Grothar, you will never be forgotten. I'll see you one day again. ♥️ Your friend always, Raven.

Never met the person I only knew as "Grothar" on a science based online community titled wunderground.
When a person one never meets has such a profound positive influence as in using wisdom in teaching goodness by example to new comers/youngins to respect others as well as themselves as "Grothar" did so well while building confidence in new/younger member this makes society, the world much richer in goodness.
One might think they can never reach such a level of passing on such goodness, yet his example shows us it does not hurt
to succeed in doing good even if we don't reach Grothar's level yet if just one person, oneself focuses on doing good throughout life's roller coaster rides one has succeeded in making this world better for all.
My heart breaks, tears flow yet I think Gro(thar) would have wanted all those that miss him to continue to grow goodness in life and pass on the wisdom he shared, so I SHALL DO SO. - Gregorio O. DeMojeca

So sad to hear this news. "Grothar" was one of the folks I looked to for info in advance of Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Unbeknownst to him and others, Weather Underground comments helped me convince my (then) landlord to take precautions when the storm was underestimated elsewhere. Have moved 2,000 miles from Jersey since that time, but had been depending on his comments for years. He will be missed.

There are so many wonderful memories of George there is not enough paper to write them all down...I met George in 1974 and the rest is history...We laughed, we ate, we cried and laughed some more. Whoever visited we all made the best of great company and everyone would say "whenever you all get together you NEVER STOP LAUGHING" and that was true right up to the end. George you were more than a friend...you were my BROTHER and I will never forget all the GREAT times with you and your wonderful family. I know you are finally out of pain and with all our LOVED ones...Especially Bobby. Love and miss you.
