“VICTORY, Willing Soldier Battle Tested!”
For battles both large and small, you were there for all.
But in the battle that counted most, by accepting Jesus Christ, you were there for self.
For the keys to the Kingdom are not given to the rich, nor to the poor;
and not by works done for self or for someone else [for by grace].*
We are comforted Unc in knowing that you are now at peace, to endure life’s clashes no more;
your earthly body soon to be laid to rest,
God’s angels having already, in the wee hours of a cool autumn morning, escorted your soul through Heaven’s open doors [gates],
to be amongst God’s best!

It is not a coincidence that certain people are apart of your journey it is part of God's plan for your journey. I am eternally blessed and forever thankful that God placed Uncle John in my journey's path. I will always remember his laughter, and never will I forget his smile.
I love you Uncle John. You have earned your peace now may you rest eternally in heaven.

My Uncle, John Otto Johnson, a military veteran serving as a non-commissioned officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, stationed in the Asiatic Pacific during World War II, passed away on October 8, 2018. As a soldier, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Bronze Star. In 2005, his bio-sketch and photograph were entered into the World War II Registry of Remembrances where they will be kept in perpetuity.
While growing up, Uncle John (and Aunt Ellie) played a pivotal role in my life. He was my mother’s oldest brother, and he had a heart of gold. He, Aunt Ellie, and my parents were close, and our families visited often and went on outings to parks, beaches, drive-in movies, amusement parks, and the like. When my father died, at the age of 42, Uncle John helped my mother (age 38) look after us (six children spanning in age from 18 to 2).
Uncle John was very knowledgeable about nature, animals, plants, and the environment. He loved fishing and gardening. He understood how things operated. He could take things apart and put them together again. He could build things from scratch and he could fix things when they were broken. When I was growing up, Uncle John seemed to always be on call. When family members had a utility problem, he could fix it. When someone had a building issue, he knew what to do about it. When community members needed to brainstorm a strategy to address civic issues of the day, he had ideas. Uncle John was a smart man, a skilled man, a stern man, a gentle man, a strong man, a civic man, a family man, a working man, a handsome man, a kind man, a responsible man, a man of great character. He was a leader and a problem solver. He gave of himself generously to family, community, and country. He was a member of the Porco’s Rod and Gun Club; he was President of his local Civic Association, he served as Grand Master of the David D. Parker Masonic Lodge, and he was a member of the American Legion.
In the mid-Nineties, I had the honor of meeting Uncle John and Aunt Ellie in California and driving them to see his brother, Willie, whom they had not seen in 40 years. In 2004, my brother Steven, and cousins Alice and Lorenzo met Uncle John and Aunt Ellie in Washington, D.C. for the dedication celebration of the National World War II Memorial. In 2014, Uncle John and Aunt Ellie were present when I was inducted into the Walt Whitman High School Hall of Fame, the very same high school district that he attended before World War II.
In the words of my cousin, the Deacon Leon Jamison, “God blessed us with a good man when he gave us Uncle John.” He touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed. My Dear Uncle, rest peacefully.
