I played quite a bit with Ken in the late 1980’s, and he was always an elegant player and a gentleman. He was instrumental in my getting on the “Fabulous Fours” tour with the 4 Lads, 4 Aces and 4 Freshmen, and that was a big boost to my career at the time. I’m sorry to hear of his passing, and send my condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. MacDonald gave me my 1st trombone in 3rd grade and was my Band Director in my senior year at HHS. He was a gentleman and I am honored to have known him.

It was a pleasure to meet Kenny through the North Shore Pops Community Band along with Jan, of course. Not only did they both contribute to public music programs, but as a couple the spark was obvious.
Every once in a while Ken would pop a few excerpts from his Big Band days; what a sound!
He will be missed in a most heartfelt manner...
RIP!

Mr. McDonald was such a kind, patient music teacher. I was lucky to have him as my teacher at Flower Hill School as a beginning music learner. Rest in peace.

Ken was a wonderful man, musician and teacher. My childhood is full of memories of being at the MacDonald home for sleep overs, lessons and just hanging around. I dearly love this family and am so sad to learn of Ken’s passing. As a kid, I remember going to hear Ken play with Clem DeRosa many times and what struck me was that every time each musician took a turn to play a solo you’d hear many players blowing their brains out trying to out do the rest and when it came Ken’s turn it was musical, and stylistically beautiful. Ken wasn’t flashy because he didn’t need to be you could tell by his tone and style he was amazing. I always felt that was how he was as a person; Not flashy just amazing!! Rest In Peace dear Ken. You will always be in my heart. Thank you for teaching me so much.

Another loving husband, dad, phenomenal musician and music educator has left us. It is with the deepest sorrow that we all mourn the passing of Ken MacDonald ... a gentleman and a master teacher who touched the lives of countless students during his teaching career in Huntington. Ken was also a professional trombonist of the highest caliber playing with many of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century. Ken's stories were legendary and most every one I have met in the jazz world knew Ken or even, played with him at one time or another.
The entire Gellert-Jones-Valcourt-Sheerin families extend their love and deepest sympathy to Jan, Scott and Stacey and to their extended family during this time of profound loss. We are all better folks (and musicians) because of Ken. He will always live in our hearts and certainly in our memories of the wonderful times we spent with him. Rest easy Ken and and now it's your turn to take the next solo break ... you already know all the changes. We will miss you terribly dear friend.
