Uncle Bernie was truly a good man with a kind heart. Forever open to growth, a lifelong learner. I'll always remember his wonderful laugh. He would try to tell a joke or story and it would be hard to hear the punch line over his laugh! Engaged in life, concerned with others almost until the end. When Mom was so sick earlier this year she had no appetite. Mary and I were desperately trying to come up with ideas for foods she could tolerate. Uncle Bernie went online and sent some items she actually would eat! Helped her diet (and our nerves!) greatly. He is loved and will be missed. I echo Bill and Mary's gratitude for all the Leonard family has done for Uncle Bernie. Surely his goodness and love will follow him all the days of his life and he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Dear all the Leonard Family and all the cousins,
I share in your grief on the passing of dear Uncle Bernie. I almost expected him to rally again as he did so often. I am so grateful to each and everyone of you for all of the love and care you gave him. Aunt Margie would be so proud! I have so many memories of Uncle Bernie but its mostly his love. He was such a simple man and could be made so happy with the smallest things, never in a rush (just look at how he drove!) and it was always the best meal he ever had. I am very sorry I could not say a final good-bye to him but Mom is really to fragile to make a trip, I will have a mass said. I hope to be in touch since Uncle Bernie was the way I knew how all of you were!
Love to all of you and God bless you for all you have done we now have yet another angel in heaven.
Mary

To the Leonard and Vollkommer families:
In Honor and Memory of Bernard A. Vollkommer,
On behalf of my sister Joan and I, we offer our deepest condolences to the Leonard and Vollkommer families and send all our love.
Our beloved Uncle Bernie was a wonderfully good man, brave and humble, and devoted to our Blessed Mother. He had grace and dignity and always offered us his wise counsel. He was extremely generous and would give you the shirt off his back. Some of my fondest memories of Uncle Bernie was when I was seven years old he would pick me up at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday mornings in the spring after my father, his beloved brother George, passed away too early in life, and practiced baseball with me, letting me pitch to him for hours at the baseball fields in Rockville Centre. We shared a lifetime love of baseball and years later I would visit with him and watch the Mets with him as they chased the pennant in September. I remember Uncle Bernie taking Joannie and I to the circus as kids with great excitement and wonder. He always had a kind word of encouragement for us no matter the circumstances in life. He put all his faith in the Lord and said that God would take care of him. He had such great faith!
Uncle Bernie was also a great American patriot serving his country in WWII as a radio operator in the U.S Army Air Corps. His was the lone survivor of his crew's plane crash on the island of Saipan in the Pacific theater in WWII. He was truly brave and faithful throughout his life. He is my hero. He is now united in Heaven with our Mom and Dad,, and Aunt Margie and Uncle Peter, and Michael. May God Bless Uncle Bernie and eternally reward him for his faithfulness. He will always be in our hearts forever.
- With much love, Joan and William F. Vollkommer
