Obituary of Bernice Liesegang

LIESEGANG - Bernice (Kachmar) December 28, 1922 - February 3, 2017. Bernice Kachmar was born in Cleveland, OH, the youngest of 8 children. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Lakewood, OH where she participated in drama, athletics and school leadership. She met Robert (Bob) Liesegang and they married in 1943. They moved to LI, settling in Huntington in 1955. Raising 8 children kept them both busy but they also enjoyed socializing with neighbors, church friends and family where Bernice developed a fondness for the dry martini (gin, stirred). Bob died in 1990 and Bernice resumed her career as a secretary. She volunteered at Huntington Hospital and St. Patrick's Church. She rediscovered golf and was an avid player until the age of 92, winning several awards. She began traveling the country and the world, at first with Bob and then with various family members and especially enjoyed European cities. Bernice was an ardent reader and kept her mind sharp until the end. She is survived by 8 children: Robert (Gail) of Bald Head Island, NC,Thomas (Eileen dec.) of Ponte Vedra, FL, Roger (Sue) of Encinitas, CA, Marilyn Harned (Michael) of Holbrook, NY, Jocelyn Maloney (Russell) of Hilton Head, SC,Carolyn Cain of Alexandria, VA, Skip (Christina) of Herndon, VA, and Jacquelyn of Huntington Station, NY, 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Bernice will be remembered for her strong faith, moral compass and easy going nature. In recent years, much of her time was spent with the large family she helped create, who always enjoyed her companionship and home-made cooking. She will rest with Bob in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington. Visiting at MA Connell Funeral Home, 934 New York Ave, Huntington Station Friday, 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral Saturday 9:30 am St Patrick's Church, Huntington.
