I'm so sorry for the great loss of your dear James. Words cannot express the pain we feel when we lose those we love. Please take comfort in knowing that our creator, Jehovah God, has promised to end death forever and to reunite us with our loved ones (Rev. 21:4 and John 5:28, 29). Be comforted by the good memories and allow your family and friends to help you through this difficult time. Remember, it is impossible for God to lie (Heb. 6:18), what he has promised will happen soon.

I didn’t grow up with Jim, but I did get to spend many a great time over the last ten+ years with my good friend Jim. As a fellow member of the Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians, Jim was always there to do the hard work, that made events like our annual St Patrick’s Day Parade possible.
On Parade Day after the Division would attend mass together dressed in our tuxes, off to Doc Finley’s pub we’d all go for brunch. While everyone else ate and drank, Jim would be collecting money at the door to tip the waitress’. My job was to make sure that Jim had his pint of Guinness. The least I could do. I will sorely miss sharing a pint of Guinness at Finley’s with him.
No more watching a Huntington High School football game at the fence on Oakwood rood on Saturday afternoon. Gone are our conversations with me trying to convince him the Republicans really are the good guys, never to happen. Who else do I know that can talk about virtually anything, A-Z and he actually listens. Heck who else do I know that graduated from Yale?
My happy thoughts….seeing my buddy with Kathleen & Megan, always made him happy and proud….
Jim Flavian Lavery, a darn good man. God bless, we’ll miss you.

Jim and I were good friends at Yale and had many friends in common in Bingham Hall as freshmen and later, Berkeley College, including Glen Homan, Russ Sale, Marty Purvis, Rob Wood, George Lazarus, Henry Jones, Mike Payne, Jeff Bader, Lanny Goldman, Charley Stuckey, Tom Sargent, and Barry Lepley. That was about fifty years ago when Yale was still all-male and one could have many male friends.
Jim liked to play poker and I did not, but that was just about the only thing we didn't do together. Sports were big then--Brian Dowling and Calvin Hill scored on the gridiron and Bill Bradley (visiting from Princeton) on the hardlourt. And, Jim liked art history (especially Vin Scully's lectures, I seem to recall), and movies, including the new foreign films then finding their way to the U.S. (perhaps mostly for their 'skin', as we called it). And pizza -- what is now called 'New Haven style pizza'.
We also shared a sports car for a while. I owned it and Jim borrowed and parked it. Once, he borrowed it see a girl but didn't tell me that the girl was in North Carolina! In the spring of '68 we drove the car to Hanover, New Hampshire to watch the finals of the NCAA Swimming Championships at Dartmouth (Don Schollander anchored Yale's winning 800 meter relay team in a dramatic comeback).
Loyal followers of Sally's--never patrons of Pepe's--we'd often split a medium sausage or pepperoni, but one night we were hungry and each had our own. And then, we each ate a second one.
After Yale, we kept in touch--meeting each other's families and occasionally seeing each other at a Yale-Harvard game or a reunion of the Class of '67 ... and once, with Kathi and Megan, a reunion at Sally's Pizza. Later still, we'd get together at a Yale-Columbia basketball game and afterwards, share a Chinese supper while discussing life and sports, and reminiscing about Yale. Jim was a great guy and I will miss him.

Jim was a classmate of mine at Syosset High School. I was shocked to read the sad news on his facebook page. It took my breath away. So hard to believe for me and I can't fathom what you all are going through now. My heartfelt condolences to Jim's family. He was such a good guy and always had a smile on his face. He will always be with you. God bless you all. Kathy Tracy

What sad and unexpected news about my cousin Jimmy. I call him Jimmy because I have such fond memories of family trips to Long Island during my childhood years - everyone hanging out and enjoying times ( and the big NY pool ) together. I always remember Jimmy being very friendly and kind - and my heart goes out to everyone in the family. What a deep loss. Please know that my thoughts are with you. Love from Maine - Marianne (Donahue)
