My earliest and fondest memories included you Uncle Freddie. I’ve always enjoyed stopping by the store to say hello or visiting the house on Sunday mornings after church. When I hear the expression “salt of the earth” it is your image that comes to mind. Your unwavering warmth and gentle kindness set an example for all of us to live by. We will miss you.

Always with a smile and a story to tell. I enjoyed listening to you as much as asking you questions. Seven o'clock was bedtime. You would come into Dr. Al's study where he and I were working on the book and you would say, with a smile, "Good night Doc, good night honey"
Good night Fred and safe travels

Uncle Freddie, You set such a great example for all of us to follow. My first job as a teenager was working for you in your old shop in Huntington Station and I learned so much from you about people and life. Your kindness, guidance and sense of humor meant more to me than you knew. I treasured the moments you shared with me and our family and later with our daughters when they where growing up. No one can argue that you were one of a kind. Rest in peace my dear Uncle and Thank You. Al and Barbara our hearts go out to you along with our prayers. Gary and Mary Catapano

Mr. Freddie - Our hearts are saddened to hear this news. Our visits for haircuts at Mr. Neil's will never be the same as we will miss sitting with you and talking. The Reilly clan loved time with you. Seeing your face light up as the boys ran towards you in church is a vision we will never forget. With thought and prayers. We lost a special man! How blessed we are to have had the time. Maria, Chris, CJ, Reagan and Dylan.

Dear Uncle Fred, As a little girl you were always my savior. On the back steps of Barrow Ct. , along with Grandma and Grandpa Artistico, you would dry my tears when Uncle Pat would make me cry. You always had that loving caring embrace when you saw me, from a newborn till my fifties. You will always give me a smile when I think of. God will have you on Angels Wings and bring you home to Aunt Lena and all those who await you with loving arms. To Al, Barbara and Family, thoughts and prayers.

Freddie.. a "one of a kind" - generous, kind and had the ability to make everyone he interacted with feel special. He was a great friend of my father's and back in the day you could always find them at Munday's having breakfast daily. I feel so fortunate that I got to see him a few months ago and only wish I would have followed my instinct to go see him last week at his shop. "Freddie the Shoemaker" - you were so much more than that and the kids and I love you.

"We were poor, but others were poorer. And it wasn't only me [who provided services for free]; we all watched out for one another. We had to. We were a community and it's what we all did." That's what Freddie the shoemaker said to me last year when I had the pleasure of having a conversation with him at his son Al’s presentation on historic Huntington. I was touched by his memories of how community members watched out for one another. I'd heard many stories from locals who said that way back to the 1950s people recalled that when they didn't have the money to have their shoes repaired, he repaired them for free, or for bunches of fruits or vegetables. Farewell Freddie. You left your impression on me, and so many others. Thank you for your service to the community.

Freddie, you were such a part of my memories of growing up in Huntington Station. You were a good friend of my late father , Freddie Catapano, and uncle, Frank Catapano. So on behalf of the Catapano's, as Bob Hope said,"thanks for the memories." They will never be forgotten. And when you are in heaven, shooting the breeze with your old friends, say hi to my father for me.
