Obituary of Robert Melville Harris Jr.

Robert Melville Harris Jr. was born on August 26, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY. He departed this life at the age of 91 years young on Sunday, October 15, 2023. He is preceeded in death by his parents-Robert M. Harris and Henrietta Harris, and sisters - Berniece Harris and Edith Harris.

Robert, affectionately known as "Bob, Bobby, Dad, Pop-Pop and Uncle Bobby" grew up in Huntington, Long Island, New York. He attended Huntington Public Schools and graduated from Huntington High School. Robert was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 17, and courageously fought in the Korean War. Upon his return from the war he was honorably discharged and returned safely to his home in Huntington. Robert also became a life memeber of the American Legion.

Robert married the love of his life, Mae, on February 8, 1959. Robert and Maeola celebrated 64 years of making memories together. This included the raising of their five children - Dexter, Annette, Robert Jr. (deceased), Steven and Donna.

Robert worked at the New York Telephone Company, aka Ma Bell, for thirty years. He retired from the company as a Telephone Desk Technician. He needed something to do so he went back to work as Harborfields Elementary School as security. He was affectionately loved by the teachers and students for 10 years until is 2nd and last retirement.

Robert loved to spend time with his family. He could always be found in Huntington visiting and checking in with his sisters, family members and friends. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports which included basketball, softball, football, baseball, and swimming. In his spare time he enjoyed walking in the neighborhood and being and inspiration to all who knew him.

Robert was an active advocate for the Montaukett Nation to gain federal recognition and even though he did not live to see it happen, he knew in his heart that he was and always will be Native American. Robert was a life member of the American Legion.

Robert's heatlh began to rapidly decline in July 2023. He fought a good fight and never stopped being the Robert Melville Harris we all know and love. On Sunday, October 15, 2023, the Lord saw the pain he was in and said, "Suffer no more" granting him his wings.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mae, sons, Dexter (Zephora) and Steven, daughters; Annette (Ronnie) and Donna (Walter). Grandchildren; Ramell (Shakiva), Shamell, Chris (Lindsey), Monique, Richard (Victoria), Kimberly (Scott), Andrew, Alexander, Aaron, Steven (Shay), Daravion, Deijah, Aniyah, Taliyah, Khymani, Marcus, Z'Nylah, Noah, and Zavion. Great grandchildren; Morgan, Justin, JAce, Elijah, Leighton, MAtthew, Asher, Brielle, Ross, Emenience, Jude, Jaxson, and Compton. Brother; William Harris (Ramona). Sister Joan Schlenker (Chris), Brother in law; Cleotha Dinnerson (Sylvia). A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
