John F Dougherty Obituary
John Dougherty, 75, passed away on May 19, 2026.
Born in Queens, New York, on June 13, 1950, John was the son of the late John J. Dougherty and Nona Wigmore Dougherty. He attended Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament School in Bayside, LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale NY, and later Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. He went on to work for Allstate for more than 30 years, where he was respected for his professionalism, strong work ethic, and kindness toward others.
John was a devoted family man and is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joan Kane Dougherty.
He was the proud father of two daughters, Coleen Dougherty and her fiancé, Keith Vespo, and Kelly Smith and her husband, Jonathan Smith. Nothing brought him greater joy than being PopPop to Jack and Andrew Schappi, and Kane, Carley, and Leyna Smith.
He is also survived by his brother, Ken Dougherty, and his wife, Cheryl Dougherty.
Known to many as “JD,” John was a loyal, trustworthy, and dependable man who was always there for the people he loved. He had a deep appreciation for old American cars, craftsmanship, stories, and tradition. He loved Pepsi, good meals shared with family, and making people laugh with his stories, unique sayings, and unforgettable laugh. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, attention to detail, generosity, and the way he made people feel safe and cared for.
Above all else, John was a good man, deeply loved by his family, and he will be missed more than words can express.
