Philip Ludwig Obituary
Philip George Ludwig of Dix Hills, New York, passed away in his home at the age of 82 on December 31, 2025.
Philip was born on April 2, 1943, in Rockville Centre, NY to Arthur and Gertrude “Trudi” Ludwig (née Brunner). Following graduation from Wheatley High School in Old Westbury, NY, Philip enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1961 until 1964. While in the Army he proudly served in both the 28th Infantry Regiment and the 24th Infantry Division as a military policeman, stationed in Munich, Bavaria, West Germany. It was during this tour of duty that Philip met and fell in love with a local girl, Inge, whom he married in 1964 near the end of his Army service. Following his military time, Philip signed onto the Nassau County Police Department in New York (2nd Precinct), from which he retired in 1986 after 20 years of service. After his police career, Philip embarked on an entirely new path in the world of antiques, which was one of his life’s passions.
Philip was a man of many interests, hobbies, and passions. While there were many of these, a few standouts were birding (not bird watching), genealogy, history, and the aforementioned antiques. As was with all his interests, Philip threw himself into these wholeheartedly. He had an immense desire to research, understand, and obtain a commanding knowledge of his interests … and he did achieve a well-recognized expertise in many of these areas. He read on his subjects constantly, and in an alternate career path, he would have properly fit into a curator position at any museum featuring fine works of art or as a scientific researcher in an ornithological society.
Philip was also extremely creative, talented, and accomplished in any and all aspects of design and building. He had an indescribable eye for presentation and a superior talent for figuring out a solution to the most intractable construction challenges. And when he took on a project, it was accomplished with a true craftsman’s sense of detail and precision. One anecdote about Philip’s creativity -and his sense of humor- was the collection of limericks he authored… unfortunately, a sample of his work cannot be exhibited here because none of them is suitable for public consumption.
Towards the latter part of his life, Philip rekindled his connection to his military service, and he realized this purpose by becoming a member of the American Legion’s Greenlawn post. Having served was indeed an immense source of pride for Philip.
But of all his character traits, talents, and interests, the ones he will be most remembered for are his big heart and his ever-present desire to teach and do acts of service for his family, especially the children.
Philip is survived by Ingeburg “Inge” (née Hopf), his wife of 61 years. He also leaves behind his children: Mathew of Reston, VA; Bonnie (Ben) of Pilot Point, TX; Therese of Dix Hills, NY; and Arthur (Brenda) of Peoria, AZ. Philip is also survived by seven grandchildren: Brianna, Stefano, Aidan, Gabrielle, Serena, Diego, and Philip. He also leaves behind his two sisters: Holly (Don) Pfeifer of Dover, DE; and Pamela (Steve) McLoughlin of Rockville Centre, NY. Philip was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur and Trudi, and his brother, Norman.
Philip’s service/memorial will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at M.A. Connell funeral home in Huntington Station, NY.
