Dorothy Cutajar Obituary

Dorothy Frances Cutajar, resident of Huntington, NY, and parishioner of St. Patrick’s Parish for 55 years, passed away peacefully at her home on November 8th, 2025, at the age of 91.

Born in Paterson, NJ, on January 14, 1934, to the late Carmine and Frances Simonelli, with her brother, Robert, Dorothy grew up in Queens where she attended and graduated from Long Island City High School in 1952.  She went on to work for Pan American. She met Oliver Cutajar in 1959 and despite not remembering his name on their first date, the two married on March 27, 1967, and went on to celebrate 58 years of marriage this year.

“Dolly and Ollie” settled in Flushing, NY, until 1970 when they moved to Huntington along with their two young sons.  In 1973, she was surprised to be blessed by twins – a boy and a girl – after doctors had only believed she was having one baby! As a full-time stay-at-home mother, Dorothy raised their four children through years at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, and Holy Family and St. Anthony’s High Schools. She frequently served as lunch mom and trip chaperone and enthusiastically attended school plays, dance recitals, and sporting events.

Dorothy was at her happiest spending time with her family, especially on summer vacations. For years they vacationed annually (and sometimes twice annually) at Host Farm in Lancaster, PA, where Dorothy loved attending the cabaret shows and the poolside cocktail hours.  She also loved bright Christmas mornings with her children and grandchildren greeting them with mounds of gifts and overflowing stockings with even wrapped underwear and toothpaste and always with an orange at the bottom.

Dorothy loved watching movies (favorites including Imitation of Life, Rhapsody, and Somewhere in Time) and TV shows, especially mysteries with Inspector Morse on PBS. She was also an avid reader of Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton among others.

Dorothy was preceded to heaven by her parents (Carmine and Frances Simonelli) and her brother (Robert Simonelli). She is survived by her beloved husband Oliver, her children, Paul (Carol Fazioli), Robert (Noreen Lundy-Cutajar), Kirk (Christine McGuigan), and Dorothy (Kevin Burke), and her grandchildren, Gregory, Jack, Audrey, James, Danny, Lucy, Madeline, and Matthew.
