Thomas M. Gilroy – March 6, 1946 – September 6, 2025
Thomas M. Gilroy (“Tom”, “Poppy”, “Mr. G.”, “Ref!”), 79, of Melville, passed away on September 6, 2025, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Marilyn. Loving father of Tim (Jill Matesic), Terry (Kim), and Erin (Chris) Triolo. Cherished grandfather of Casey, Matt, Tommy, Sean, Shea, Bryce, Ellie, Timothy, and Dylan. Dear brother of Dan, Pat Marsella, Ed (Sue), and Terry (Craig) Frey.
In addition to the unconditional love and support he provided his family always, Tom was a beloved middle school principal who impacted the lives of students and staff in many ways, maintaining relationships with them throughout their lives. He started his career in education in Jackson Heights, Queens, and continued his career at middle schools in Merrick and Manhasset. He also loved the interim roles he held in a number of communities. He loved his profession and became an important part of the communities he served.
Tom was a 40-year basketball official and a top official in Suffolk County until his retirement at the age of 75. The “Tom Gilroy Officials Award” is awarded annually by IAABO Board 127 to top-performing officials at each level. Tom loved St. John’s University where he graduated in 1968, coached football until 1979, and remained a supporter throughout his life. He also loved the New York Mets and Willie Mays.
In his retirement, Tom spent long, happy hours with his nine grandchildren. He was with them on fields and in gyms watching them play sports, on golf courses teaching them to play golf, and at all places in between. He had a huge impact on their lives and they will miss him dearly. He was an avid golfer and became a “golf junkie” in his retirement. If you needed a fourth for a weekday game, Tom G. was your first call.
His true love was Marilyn, who moved mountains to make his final years as meaningful and as comfortable as possible. Tom and Marilyn met at St. John’s and their enduring love was a marvel to all who knew them.
