Mary and Jim became true philhellenes once introduced to real Greek cuisine and my homeland of Crete during our international research initiatives in Greece. Mary and Jim shared the love of my hometown, Astoria (Greek America) and, of course, soon honed in on the most authentic place to eat outside of Greece there - Uncle George's.
I marvel at their mutual passion, incredible energy and acumen for finding fascinating world travel destinations; they became my guide to Greek islands off the beaten path!
Mary's beautiful persona, great sense of humor and smile created a shared space of joy for those lucky to know her.
Aunt Mary Byrd was a beautiful person inside and out. Sending my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
