Obituary of Alexander E. Roeder

Please share a memory of Alexander to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Roeder, Alexander Edward died on March 2nd, 2018 at the age of 87. The former longtime resident of Huntington was born in Queens Village, New York to Alexander Edward and Anne Gormley Roeder.  He was the younger brother of William and Theodore Roeder, both of whom predeceased him.  Alexander “Sandy” was a graduate of Georgetown University and a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy, having served on a destroyer, the USS Stephen Potter, during the Korean War. After a stint as a reporter for the Hopewell News, he was an English teacher at Roslyn Junior High School for more than 30 years.  He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church for over 50 years where he served as an usher and CCD instructor. Sandy loved to golf and play the horses. He followed Georgetown basketball and the New York Yankees, but also enjoyed the novels of Graham Greene, Walt Whitman’s poetry, and the music of Rodgers & Hart. He contained multitudes. Sandy was a masterful storyteller who gave speeches with relish and captivated a room. He was thrilled to perform lead roles in community theatre productions of Damn Yankees and Guys & Dolls. Above all, he took pride and delight in his family. He was the devoted husband of Catherine Fetherston Roeder for 60 years, until her death in 2016. He is survived by his children Margaret (Richard) Maynes, Susan (Thomas) Doherty, Christopher (Linda), Gregory (Carol), Stephen (Anne) and Katherine (Zachary) Roeder Howard. He was the proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Matthew, Allison, Laura, Kelsey, Bryn, William, Kevin, Cullen, Owen, Keegan, Gillian, Griffin, Alexander, Violet & Tess.
